Housing and Environment

We must meet the needs of the community, particularly our young people trying to get on to the property ladder for the first time. All accommodation both private and publicly owned should be fit for purpose and affordable. Solar energy and energy efficiency should be encouraged.

We need to develop and encourage a balance between the “head” type of professions including the sciences, finance and digital type work, the “hand” professions, builder, mechanic and farmer and the “heart” types of work such as nursing, social workers and psychologists.

Economy

Our economy is heavily reliant on the finance and tourism industries. It is important that we support individuals wishing to enter into these careers, however, it is important to look for new industries for the future and find innovative ways to diversify and grow our economy.

Hello! I’m Deputy Inna Gardiner, an independent States Member for St Helier North.
My husband David and our 10-year-old daughter Mia are Jersey-born. My family and I live in St Helier, and like many families we are close to everyday community life – what makes our town special, and what still needs improving.

I have been proud to represent our Parish for the past seven years. I bring over 25 years of leadership experience in business and public life.

About my service as a States Member

I was first elected to the States Assembly in the St Helier Districts 3 & 4 by-election in 2019 and re-elected in 2022 as Deputy for St Helier North. I am President of the Scrutiny Liaison Committee and Chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). I am also a member of Vice Chair of the the Political Awareness and Education Sub-Committee and Member of the Diversity Forum supporting strong, fair and well-informed democratic decision-making.

My focus in public office

My work has centred on two priorities:

1) Delivering for St Helier: Listening to residents and working with people to turn local ideas into practical improvements.

2) Strong scrutiny and value for money: Holding Government to account for how public money is spent and how public services are delivered — with a focus on transparency, delivery and good governance.

Previous roles and panels

Alongside constituency work, I have held a number of roles across the Assembly, including:

  • Minister for Children and Education
  • Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel Member
  • Future Hospital Review Panel member
  • Government Plan and Hospital review panels Member
  • Chair International Cultural Centre

I was also a member of the Executive Committee for the Commonwealth Association of the Public Accounts Committees, supporting good governance standards through international parliamentary networks.

My background and how I work
Before becoming a States Member, I trained as a social worker. Over 20 years, I worked as a self-employed management consultant, supporting organisations to improve how they work – strengthening leadership, teamwork, diversity and collaboration.
I bring that approach into politics: listen carefully, work with people, and deliver practical results.
If you see me around St Helier, please say hello, and if you have an idea, concern, or suggestion, I want to hear it.
