A Fair deal for St. Helier

My objective as a States member is to continue to strive for a fair deal for St Helier by seeking a balanced urban development that makes Town a great place to live, work and relax.

A third of Jersey’s  population lives in St Helier. These residents are the powerhouse of Jersey’s economy – not just today, but in the years to come. Numerically and proportionally, more St. Helier residents are employed than in any other parish.

St. Helier contributes to the economy more than any other parish however, gets proportionally less back. Funds are easily made available for environmental and community projects in country parishes, but not for areas like First Tower, where the population density is considerably higher.

Within the Parish of St Helier, I have

  • Supported parishioners in matters relating to the new hospital project;
  • Ensured a 50 per cent allocation of affordable housing in country parishes regardless of parish connections;
  • Ensured that the primary schools in St Helier be considered as part of infrastructure planning;
  • Established with Thrive the Grow Community field;
  • Worked in cooperation with residential association for  the First Tower Community hub development;
  • Established play area standards for the benefit of children and their parents.

Working for St Helier I will:

  • Continue to hold regular surgeries to discuss your concerns and do my utmost to find practical solutions to your issues;
  • Continue in my role as chairman of the St Helier Community Strategy steering group, bringing together stakeholders from different sectors to meet needs and services  required by our community;
  • Continue campaigning to make ensure that St Helier ratepayers do not pay for Parish’s services provided for free in other parishes. St. Helier currently pays for the maintenance of its parks and public toilets, however other parishes do not have this burden. I will campaign for equality in this area along with every other aspect of parish finances.
  • Continue to seek improvement of pedestrian safety in the town. As chairman of the St John’s Road safety board, to ensure that proposed traffic calming measures are implemented, improving the safety of pedestrians  and cyclists in built-up areas.

Parking in St. Helier

There are a number of St. Helier residents waiting for up to two years for residential parking permits, and I will work to have the residential parking scheme reviewed so that it’s fairer and faster.

We need to consider the shoppers of St.Helier, and its retail businesses to survive a complete review of parking with just one authority in charge is needed.

I would monitor all new developments in St. Helier and will insist on the planning at least one parking space per unit.

Living in St. Helier, I support the aim of the Council of Ministers and the Constable to continually improve the environment in St. Helier for both the residents and visitors.
