A vibrant, lively town thrives only when paired with true liveability.
St Helier has some of the Island’s most important public spaces including People’s Park, the Waterfront, the Harbour, Havre Des Pas, West centre, Charles Squire, Marina Gardens, Le Jardin de la Mere, the Weightbridge and Liberation Square, Valley Des Vaux, First tower and more.
These spaces bring life to our town. They help create community, support local businesses and make St Helier a place people enjoy. But they must also be managed fairly and responsibly for the people who live nearby.
As your Constable, I will support a more balanced approach to events across St Helier. From one side that keeps the town active, while recognising that residents need consideration, communication and sensible management.
A Better Balance Across St Helier
I will work to:
- Support a wider use of different locations across St Helier
- Encourage a fairer spread of higher-impact events, rather than concentrating them in one area
- Make sure the needs of residents are properly considered alongside the wider benefits of events
This is not about stopping events. It is about planning them better.
Supporting a Town Full of Life
A good events programme can:
- Bring activity and energy to more parts of town
- Support local traders, cafés and businesses
- Create opportunities for culture, music and community celebration
- Help residents and visitors enjoy more of St Helier
I want St Helier to feel vibrant, welcoming and full of life.
Respecting Residents
At the same time, I understand the concerns residents have raised about disruption.
Where events take place, I will work for:
- Better communication with residents in advance through my opened drop in sessions and proper consultation
- Careful consideration of frequency, scale and location
- A balanced approach that takes account of local impact
- Ongoing dialogue so concerns are heard and not overlooked
I cannot promise that all disruption can be avoided, because events do have an impact. But I do believe that disruption should be minimised where possible, managed better and shared more fairly across the town.
A Smarter Approach to Public Spaces
St Helier has a wide range of public spaces, each with its own character and potential.
I want to see a more thoughtful approach that:
- Matches the right event to the right location
- Makes better use of the town’s full range of spaces
- Avoids putting too much pressure on any one neighbourhood
- Helps create a stronger natural flow between different parts of St Helier
This would support both a livelier town and a fairer experience for residents.
My Commitment
I want St Helier to be:
- Active and welcoming
- Rich in culture and community life
- Better balanced across different neighbourhoods
- Respectful of the people who live here every day
A lively town and a liveable town must go hand in hand please see a draft set of guidelines for events in St Helier.
1: Each location to have a maximum number of events per 28 days.
2: There must be clear gaps between events.
3: Events should be evenly distributed between sites.
4: A separate complaints team for events that gives timely responses.
5: A transparent public calendar for proposed events and consultation before approval.
6: Road and noise controls and considerations.
7: Ongoing dialogue with drops ins for resident input.
